Now on video! Athens author and teacher David Oates teaches a small class in the writing of haiku poetry. This video is a condensation of classes taught on three successive Saturdays at Athens-Clarke County Library, Athens Georgia in September 2016. Oates teaches how to capture moments that made you feel something, from nature or from people. While the starting point for this approach is from the Japanese poetry tradition, the class is not limited to traditional subjects or counting syllables. David Oates shares examples from his own and others’ work, and three students read their work at the end of the video.

Oates has 30 years experience teaching writing, has had three books published, and his work has appeared in many magazines He is the host and producer of “Wordland” on WUGA FM. Oates received his master’s in creative writing from the University of Illinois—Chicago.
